Clas Ohlson Foundation and Plan International celebrate five years together – with continued support for children’s right to education in Nigeria

Clas Ohlson Foundation is extending its partnership with Plan International and continuing to support educational initiatives for children in Nigeria. The collaboration between the parties began in 2020 in the Minawao refugee camp in northern Cameroon. After three years in Cameroon, the support is now entering its second year in Nigeria – a country where children’s right to education is threatened by violent conflicts and insecurity.

In north-eastern Nigeria, the terrorist group Boko Haram and other armed groups have been targeting the education system as part of their ideological agenda since 2009. Schools have been destroyed, and children have been kidnapped, forced into child marriage or exploited as child soldiers. Millions of people have been forced to flee their homes, which has also led to many children no longer attending school. Around three million children are in urgent need of support to be able to attend school. The situation is exacerbated by extreme poverty, significant inequalities and the effects of climate change.

Plan International’s humanitarian education project in Borno State aims to help thousands of children return to school. The project focuses on creating safe and functional school environments, providing teaching materials and psychosocial support, and recruiting and training new teachers. In addition, hundreds of existing teachers will receive further training to improve the quality of teaching.

Support from the Clas Ohlson Foundation contributes to:

  • Dialogues with local communities about the importance of schooling for children and back-to-school campaigns
  • Construction and renovation of schools
  • Distribution of school supplies
  • Efforts to create safe environments for children
  • Assessment of children with disabilities and distribution of assistive devices

– Education gives children a way out of crisis and conflict, and a chance for a better future. Thanks to partners such as the Clas Ohlson Foundation, we can reach the children who need support the most. We are delighted about this continued collaboration, says Charles Usie, Country Director for Plan International Nigeria.

– We are very pleased with what we have achieved so far together with Plan International. Continuing to contribute to children’s right to education in one of the world’s most vulnerable areas is both meaningful and important to us. Together, we are creating hope for a better future, says Dimitri Haid, Clas Ohlson Foundation.

With continued joint commitment from the Clas Ohlson Foundation and Plan International, more children in Nigeria will have the opportunity to go to school, regain security and believe in the future. Together, we are laying the foundation for a generation that can grow up free from violence, with rights that are respected and with knowledge that opens doors to a better life.
